Specialist eye examination
A complete examination of your vision and eye health by a specialist ophthalmologist — the best way to detect problems early, before you notice them.
Why are regular examinations important?
According to the World Health Organization, at least 2.2 billion people worldwide have a vision impairment — and in at least a billion of them it could have been prevented or has not yet been treated. The most common causes are uncorrected refractive error, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

of people with glaucoma don’t know they have it
Many eye diseases have no symptoms at first. Glaucoma, for example, damages the optic nerve slowly and painlessly — which is why half of those affected don’t know they have it. By the time symptoms appear, part of the vision is often already irreversibly lost. A regular examination is the only reliable way to detect changes in time.
Premium Plus
The earliest signs of glaucoma and retinal changes are best seen on imaging — imaging of the optic nerve and the blood vessels of the fundus is included in the Premium Plus examination
What does the examination include?
- a conversation about your symptoms, general health and family medical history
- visual acuity check and prescription
- eye pressure measurement
- examination of the front of the eye with a slit lamp
- examination of the back of the eye (fundus)
- findings with a recommendation for further treatment or the next examination
If you would also like images of the optic nerve and fundus, which allow comparison at future check-ups, choose the Premium Plus examination.
How often should you have an examination?
If you have no symptoms or risk factors, a first thorough examination is recommended by the age of 40 at the latest, as this is when the first signs of disease and changes in vision can appear. After that, the general recommendations of the American Academy of Ophthalmology are:
| Who | How often |
|---|---|
| School-age children | every 1–2 years |
| Adults without symptoms, 40–54 | every 2–4 years |
| Adults, 55–64 | every 1–3 years |
| Adults over 65 | every 1–2 years |
| People with diabetes | at least once a year |
More frequent examinations are needed if you have diabetes, high blood or eye pressure, a family history of glaucoma, a high prescription, or if you take medicines that can affect the eye.
When to come in immediately?
Don’t wait for a regular appointment if you notice:
- a sudden drop in or blurring of vision
- flashes of light or a sudden increase in “floaters” in your field of vision
- a shadow or “curtain” over part of your field of vision
- pain or severe redness of the eye
- double vision
For such symptoms we offer an urgent eye examination.
Specialist or Premium Plus?
Both examinations include a complete specialist examination. Premium Plus is the right choice if you want a fuller picture and a documented record of your eye health for future comparison.
